GIẢI VÔ ÐỊCH CỜ VUA TRẺ CHÂU Á 2001 Asian Youth Chess Championship, Bikaner - India Jan 7 to 17, 2001
Giải cờ vua vô địch Châu Á các lứa tuổi dưới 14 tại Bikaner (Ấn Ðộ) từ 7 đến 14 tháng 1, đoàn VN với 8 kỳ thủ nam, nữ thi đấu ở đủ 4 lứa tuổi và đã giành thắng lợi lớn khi đoạt 2 HCV, 1 HCB và 1 HCÐ. Chiếc HCV thứ nhất thuộc về nữ kỳ thủ Hoàng Bảo Trâm (TT-Huế) thi đấu ở bảng G-14 (nữ U.14), nơi có 10 VÐV thi đấu. Chiếc HCV thứ 2 thuộc về kỳ thủ Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn (Kiên Giang) 10 tuổi nhưng thi đấu ở bảng B-12 (nam U.12), nơi có 14 kỳ thủ tranh tài. Như vậy Trường Sơn đã đoạt đủ bộ ba HCV Ðông Nam Á, châu Á và thế giới. Ở lứa tuổi B-10 (nam U.10) kỳ thủ Lê Quang Liêm (TPHCM) đã đua tài cùng 18 VÐ và xuất sắc giành HCB ngay lần đầu xuất ngoại. Nữ kỳ thủ Ngô Kim Tuyến (Quảng Ninh) thi đấu ở bảng G-10 (nữ U.10) với 9 VÐV cũng giành HCÐ. Dự giải lần này có 76 VÐV từ 8 nước: Ấn Ðộ, Việt Nam, Uzbekistan, Iran, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Mông Cổ, Kyrgyztan. Cờ vua Việt Nam một lần nữa lại mở đầu năm mới rất ngoạn mục.
Ðầu năm 2000, Hoàng Thanh Trang đã mở đầu năm 2000 bằng chiếc HCV châu Á.
Viet Nam’s youth juggernaut rolls on
Viet Nam’s chess players have had a flying start to the new year, winning two gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in India this week.
Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, who won the World U-10 championships in Spain last year, took gold in the U-12 competition. Son won seven matches, drew one and lost one. Hoang Bao Tram, the only player to win nine matches, took the second gold for Viet Nam in the girl’s U-14 section. Le Quang Liem won silver in the boy’s U-10 and Kim Tuyen took bronze in the girl’s U-10.
The Asian Youth Chess Championships hosted 75 players from eight countries, including India, Iran, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Kyrgyztan and Viet Nam.The medals won at the championships strengthen Viet Nam’s position in Asian chess, where it is ranked third.
Last year, local chess players won 45 international medals. Two of these medals were won at the World Championships (Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son’s U-10 gold and Dang Bich Ngoc’s U-18 bronze).
At present, the nation has four International Grand Chess Masters (three men and one woman), eight international masters (six women and two men), and 15 players with FIDE (International Chess Association) accreditation. In Chinese chess, two players last year received International Grand Master titles (one woman and one man) and 11 became international masters (eight men and three women).
This year, Vietnamese chess players will compete in several important tournaments, including the Asian Youth Championships, the ASEAN Championships, the World Junior Championships and the U-20 World Championships.

There were 75 participants in fray from eight Asian Countries including India, Uzbekistan, Srilanka, Iran, Mangolia, Krygystan and Vietnam.
Y Sandeep (U-10 boys'), D Meenu (U-10 girls') and Saheli Nath (U-12 girls) did India proud with gold medals, while last year winner of U-12, Abhijit Gupta got silver and G Rohit won bronze. The world No.2 in girls' U-10, India's D Harika, won a silver in under-12. Dhyani Dave finished second in U-10 girls' and Kritika Nadig took the second slot in under-14 leaving India with a huge bag of medals. In the U-14 for boys, the Iran's Sayed Javadalvi Mogadam was the top seed but the title winner was Gareev Timur. Young Madurai star Deepan Chakravarthy took the bronze. In the boys' U-10, India's Y Sandeep (6.5) tied for the first place with Vietnam's Quang Liem. But better progressive score saw the Andhra lad clinching the title. T Semeti of Krygystan (6.0) tied for the third place with India's National Champion and top seed T Gobin. But ultimately Gobin finished fourth.
Two Indian girls became the new Asian Champions. In U-10, D Meenu from Andhra Pradesh won gold, scoring 6.5 inm the nine-round round robin league. Ahmedabad based Dhayani Dave (5.5) finished second ahead of Kim Tuyen, Vietnam. Both scored 5.5, but after applying Koya system tiebreak, Dhyani finished ahead of Kim Tuyen. In U-12 girls' section, India's Saheli Nath got the first place by a half point over his teammate D Harika (7.0). Dronavalli Harika got the silver for India in the U-12 event while M Rajdarshini took the bronze with 6.5 points.
